CREATIVE PEOPLE OF ALL AGES RETHINK ASPECTS OF URBAN LIFE IN MUNICH AND RESPOND TO GLOBAL CHALLENGES WITH LOCAL INITIATIVES.
Along with several projects run by the environmental protection routinier GREEN CITY, enterprising new initiatives have emerged in the city. In the common gardens project of O’PFLANZT IS everyone can experience what an EDIBLE CITY could be like: become a gardener and taste the harvested fruits and crops. Other beautiful retreats are the tropical greenhouses of the BOTANIC GARDEN, the GLYPTOTHEK café or the enchanted garden of the VILLA STUCK. In summer, the contemplative HOFGARTEN behind Odeonsplatz offers spectators a scene of Munich savoir vivre when regulars gather for a game of boules or the occasional tango in the evening. Many open café workshops, such as the HUJI or the HAUS FÜR EIGENARBEIT, offer visitors the chance to resist the throwaway culture and be creative. REHAB-REPUBLIC combine fun with meaningful action in anything from carrotmob-clubbing for renewable energies to hosting clothes swap parties as an alternative to buying cheap fashion. FOODSHARHING, VERSCHENK’S and OUISHARE promote sharing capacities and resources while PLASTIKFREIE ZONE shows us how to live without plastic waste. Taking up on the trend to eat meat-free, VEGANZ opened the first vegan supermarket in Munich. How eating burgers can co-exist with the decent treatment of animals is shown at the HERMANNSDORFER LANDWERKSTÄTTEN and KONRADHOF farms – two worthwhile excursions to the beautiful countryside around Munich. Their farm produce is available in organic shops and, as a result of generally mounting awareness, figures on the menus in many of the city’s restaurants, such as the HOLY BURGER. Munich also has a heart for its humming citizens. In times of high bee mortality the initiative MÜNCHEN SUMMT (HUMMING MUNICH) has set up several bee-hives in locations such as the roof of the city’s Gärtnerplatz theatre or the SEIDLVILLA, where you can even watch the apiarists go about their work.
